Pillar One · Free, forever

Every child has a way in. We build until we find it.

If someone just told you “something’s different” about your child, or you’ve known for years: this page is for you. No product on it costs money. Nothing here is a trial that expires. This is the part of ThinkAthena we consider the point.

Why we’re here

The help exists. It wasn’t built for you.

A child who communicates differently is not a child who thinks less. But the tools that help are priced like medical equipment: $3,000 to $9,000 for a dedicated speech device, locked behind insurance and “medical necessity” approvals, or $100–$300 apps that quietly assume a specialist will configure them. Around a third of caregivers say they never got real training on the tools they were handed. The gap is not the technology. The gap is who it was designed for: the clinic, and not the parent operating it at 7pm on a Tuesday.

And almost all of it stops at communication. The systems that fund these tools pay for medical necessity, so learning, play, and curiosity are someone else’s department. We think that split is wrong. For a child, expressing a thought and learning from it are the same motion.

Our mission for this pillar

Give every family free, well-made tools that treat communication and learning as one thing, treat the parent as the child’s first teacher, and never send a bill.

This pillar is personal. One of our own kids learns this way. The first tools were built at our own kitchen table for our own family, and I am rebuilding them properly, for everyone. These are the tools we wish had existed when we started, so they will always be free. Not free-tier free. Free. There is no upsell behind this page: the suite is the business, and this is what the business is for.

What we’re building

Four things, honestly labeled.

Designing now

The Front Door

A free, plain-language starting point for the day everything is confusing: what a speech-language pathologist actually does, what AAC is, which questions to ask at the evaluation, what you can try at home this week. Navigation and education, not diagnosis. Your clinician stays your clinician.

In family testing

A communication-first learning companion

Words, symbols, and speech output woven into stories, play, and learning, so expression and understanding grow together. Built parent-first: it configures itself from how your child actually uses it, and vocabulary grows continuously instead of at quarterly appointments.

Researching

The parent coach

Specialists see your child an hour a week at best. You’re there for the rest. A coach that turns the in-between hours into gentle, specific practice, and tells you honestly what the evidence does and does not support.

The long game

The exploratory engine

Child-led learning that follows your child’s interests and adapts to how they explore. Informed by affirming approaches like gestalt language processing, held to evidence, and never forced. This engine is the core the whole company is built around.

Straight answers

What we will and won’t claim.

Will this replace speech therapy?
No, and we will never claim it does. Everything here is designed to sit alongside your child’s clinicians and give you more to work with between visits.
Does AAC stop kids from talking?
The evidence says no. Communication tools support expression and reduce frustration. We do not claim they accelerate speech, because the evidence doesn’t claim that either.
What happens to my child’s data?
A nonverbal child’s words are the most sensitive data we can imagine holding. So: as little as possible, on the device where possible, never sold, never used to train models without your separate and explicit consent. The full policy is on the privacy page.
When they’re ready

Send one email and we’ll tell you. That’s all.

Everything on this page is free when it ships. If you’re an SLP or a special-education teacher and want to shape these tools, write to richa@thinkathena.ai. We need your eyes more than we need your endorsement.

Email me when they’re ready

One-click signup lands this week. Until then, one email does it. No spam, no tricks.
